As the famous saying goes, you never forget how to ride a bike. There are loads of different types of bike riding, which is one reason why so many different people are able to take part. What you may not know however is that cycling is one of the best sports around for helping to combat depression and is actually prescribed by doctors in many countries. So why is that cycling is so good for your mental health?

Outdoors. To start with, cycling is more often than not an outdoor activity. Staying indoors when you are low is one of the worst things you can do as you end up feeling trapped and confined, so finding some space is advised. Add to this the fact that getting some sun is proven to make you feel happier and fresh air has a similar effect. Bikes are also a great deal easier to transport than other outdoor equipment such as surfboards or used kayaks.

People tend to either comfort eat or neglect their appearance when suffering from depression and this usually makes things worse. Cycling is a great aerobic sport that works to burn off fat and get you looking slimmer.
