Are You Sitting On Your Hands Waiting To Be Rescued?
A discussion with a new friend on Facebook yesterday prompted me to write this. It is no secret that we all desire a better life in some way shape or form, whether it be a healthy, attractive body, a stronger financial position, a much improved relationship with our partner or even freedom from a severely oppressed society.
How many of us believe that God/the Universe, a posse of angels, the government or the ubiquitous ‘someone else’ is going to gallop up to you on a white steed and grant our wishes or alleviate our pain? How many of us are sitting on our hands and waiting to be rescued when accepting and taking personal responsibility is what is really needed?
Sometimes in our lives we will experience some form of serendipity – whether it be a chance meeting with the right person at the right time, an opportunity presented to us, we receive advance warning of some looming crisis and perhaps information on how to best navigate around the challenge without getting badly ‘beat up’…and perhaps even profit from the experience. How many of us don’t follow up on these subtle and often not so subtle ‘hints’?
While the ‘coincidence’ phenomena is alive and well, I believe (and I am not alone in this thought) that many of the somewhat ‘random’ events that happen in our lives are in some way answers to the desires we hold in our minds, catalysts that can help us to take effective action to make things happen for ourselves….or motivate us to move out of harm’s way.
Here is a little story that I hope illustrates the point I am trying to get across:
It had been raining for days and days, and a terrible flood had come over the land. The waters rose so high that one man was forced to climb onto the roof of his house to avoid the floodwaters, faithfully praying to God to save him.
As the waters rose higher and higher, a man in a rowboat appeared, and told him to get in. “No,” replied the man on the roof. “I have faith in the Lord, the Lord will save me.” So the man in the rowboat went away. The man on the roof prayed for God to save him.
The waters rose higher and higher, and suddenly a speedboat appeared. “Climb in!” shouted a man in the boat. “No,” replied the man on the roof. “I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me.” So the man in the speedboat went away. The man on the roof prayed even harder, knowing that God would save him.
The waters continued to rise. A helicopter appeared and over the loudspeaker, the pilot announced he would lower a rope to the man on the roof. “No,” replied the man on the roof. “I have faith in the Lord, the Lord will save me.” So the helicopter went away. The man on the roof prayed again for God to save him, steadfast in his faith.
The waters rose higher and higher, and eventually they rose so high that the man on the roof was washed away, and alas, the poor man drowned.
Upon arriving in heaven, the man marched straight over to God. “Heavenly Father,” he said, “I had faith in you, I prayed to you to save me, and yet you did nothing. Why?” God gave him a puzzled look, and replied “I sent you two boats and a helicopter, what more did you expect than that?”
