Empowerment (Self) does it mean anything?

When I was in undergrad courses at a University, it was asked of our class in a general sense (we were sociologist major, so it's food for thought as to the behavior of people in group interaction) Do we think we would cheat on an exam or any course related event. As I thought our entire class admitted that cheating was not a option. For me I don't see the use in cheating in an event whereby, empowerment is the result, whether higher education, endurance for sports, or self confidence for trivia type games or events. What's the point in playing a game or getting involved with an event that is self empowering, and then cheat. It's not as if you cheated and won by achievement or skill, what you have actually done is cheated yourself and all those involved of what their personal level of achievement could have been? What's the point, why even step to the starting line?
well, some people cheat in order to gain fame..(as you win an event, you gain fame)..
you see sometime even famous people "cheat"..example famous footballers are pulled out of the field after failing drug test..you see sometimes it not they want too, they want to live up to their reputation so they screw up themselves..
however i totally disagree one should cheat to gain fame..it sucks
