Hum or sing to yourself when you can. Take walks in the sun. Take care of something, like a plant. If you’re allowed, listen to positive music as you work.

It is really hard to remain positive when all the influences around you are negative. Either make the changes to take yourself out of negative situations, by quitting your job etc, or be prepared to stick it out. Try not to let their comments get to you, i know it is hard, but there is no sure fire way to aviod this other than your own outlook. Just try as hard as you can to remain positive and try to think of a good side to every bad situation. Every negative comment someone says, think of a positive and tell them. This may in turn make their attitudes and outlooks more positive. If not, then look for a different place to work as you dont need that in your life! Good Luck – and stay happy!

I think this is a great question! I too am struggling to maintain a positive attitude while surrounded by such negative people. To be honest with you I mind my own business and dont get involved in those conversations. If a negative comment arises just excuse your self. Dont quit your job. A lot of people deal with this same sort of thing all you have to do is stay true and honest to yourself and your job. Dont get mixed up with the drama, politics and gossip.

I have had similar struggles. What helps me is understanding where the criticism is really coming from: their own fears and insecurities. Now I take in their criticisms in the context of where the remark is coming from and that is hugely helpful.

I feel your pain. You learn over time to tune it out. I too have a negative influence at work, it got so bad that when he spoke, my skin crawled, talk about self control….I expressed it once in asking, "Have you ever just had the urge to hit someone in the back of the head with a 2×4?" Over time, and I am not saying it will take long, you learn to tune it out. You probably have tried to reason with this negativity and it gets you nowhere so you are frustrated. Some people are just like that, they grow older faster being miserable. Don’t let it bring you down, being a positive person you can just accept its the way it is with these people and ignore it. Tough as it might be hold your tongue, learn to shut it out and smile, smile alot!!

To keep you positive you can’t be around negative people, or you could but if you’re just a few hours. If you can quit then do it. But if not, then find other activity to do before or after work that relaxes you, you could find very positive people at some art activity (painting, acting classes, music, etc) good luck!
