How strong/important is self motivation?

I am doing a project for a class and I need to write a paper on an ontological question. My question is "How strong/important is self motivation", I'm trying to get different perspectives and opinions on this topic, so just write down what you think, anythings helpful.

Difficult to say- everyone's opinions are different.

I saw a paper ("Through A Glass Darkly? – When Self-Doubts Turn Into Relationship Insecurities) where the authors (Phoebe Ellsworth, Sandra Murray, Geoff MacDonald)

said that from Self-Determination (D) comes;

Self Image
Self-Esteem
Mental Abilities
Physical strength/abilities
Self-Control
Self-Concept.

If "self motivation" = "Self-Determination", then I guess that's your answer.

What are your thoughts about positive thinking?

I would like to get peoples opinions on positive thinking. I’m writing an article/presentation for work and would just like to get some other views on it.

Thank you in advance!

You can research cognitive-behavioral therapy, which follows a model that you might find interesting.

Beliefs affect actions and words, and observations can reinforce beliefs. This creates a cycle. Suppose you’ve got a dysfunctional lifestyle or bad habits, like worrying too much. If I keep believing that bad things will happen in a specific situation, then I’ll only notice and validate the bad things that happen to justify and reinforce my belief. One way to break out of it is to consciously remind myself to believe otherwise. Another way to break my worrying is to take note of exceptions to what I believe, or try to say or do something different to prove myself otherwise.

So if I think positively, then I’ll see the good things in life and convince myself more about positive things. Positive thinking also opens myself up to positive results and believing that they really happen normally (as opposed to being some fluke).

Is a buisness degree right for me?

I am an undecided major in college right now. I am a visual, logic, intrapersonal intelligence. I excel in algebra. Im not good at persuading people but i am good at useing the bold approach to making them. Im self empowered mor or less. I thought i was a psy major but im not. I like the atmosphere of being in the buisness "getting it done" state of mind. Buisness executive?

The first thing that came across my mind was for you to be a teacher. And after you get your masters you can be a professor at a local college. You can still get your degree in business but I bet you would make a great teacher or professor. You are analytical, intelligent, understanding of others and how they perceive you, those are really good traits. Teachers do make good money. My mother is a retired teacher, she taught high school and then college and she loved. And if you ever plan on having a family the hours are really good.

How do you deal with self motivation?

I struggle with a positive reward system and self motivation. Do you have any tips on how you keep yourself motivated to keep up with your responsibilities such as; school work, a job, relationships, exercising, and eating right? I just cannot seem to motivate myself to be consistent so I am able to reach my goals. Any stories of learning how to motivate yourself or tips will be appreciated!

I have found a couple of things help. One is to postpone something I want to do. For example, I decide to wait until I did housework before I watched a DVD. Another thing is to put a limit on something that isn’t productive. I will decide that I am going to watch TV or take a nap for just an hour. Then I will do things that I need to do.

Does positive thinking work as well as prayers?

Prayers commonly involve making personal requests to God. Praying personnels are often encouraged to believe that they have already receive the things they ask for, and to give thanks to God for answering the prayer. Studies have shown that this kind of positive prayers have a relatively high degree of success in terms of prayer request fufilment. Supposing if I employ the same amount of faith, but replacing prayers with purely positive thinking and affirmation without any conscious connection to God, will it have the same effects?

There is so much that is wrong with your thinking, I don't know where to begin … and I don't mean that in an insulting way, it's just that you think like so many others (including many Christians I know personally) who do not understand prayer.

Prayer is not about personal requests. Those who pray to God for something and then give thanks for answering the prayer are misled. We give thanks to God for meeting our needs and thanks for His love. That's it. If you study the prayers in the Bible, there aren't any personal requests lol.

Having said that, yes, positive thinking will get you a relatively high degree of success, even without any conscious connection to God. You should study it further, you'd be surprised.

Empowerment (Self) does it mean anything?

When I was in undergrad courses at a University, it was asked of our class in a general sense (we were sociologist major, so it's food for thought as to the behavior of people in group interaction) Do we think we would cheat on an exam or any course related event. As I thought our entire class admitted that cheating was not a option. For me I don't see the use in cheating in an event whereby, empowerment is the result, whether higher education, endurance for sports, or self confidence for trivia type games or events. What's the point in playing a game or getting involved with an event that is self empowering, and then cheat. It's not as if you cheated and won by achievement or skill, what you have actually done is cheated yourself and all those involved of what their personal level of achievement could have been? What's the point, why even step to the starting line?

well, some people cheat in order to gain fame..(as you win an event, you gain fame)..
you see sometime even famous people "cheat"..example famous footballers are pulled out of the field after failing drug test..you see sometimes it not they want too, they want to live up to their reputation so they screw up themselves..

however i totally disagree one should cheat to gain fame..it sucks
